GPA & Grading Systems Around the World
Different countries use very different ways to grade students. Below is a quick overview of the major systems supported by this calculator and how they map back to a universal 4.0 GPA so you can compare results internationally.
USA (4.0 Scale)
The standard American GPA runs from 0.0 to 4.0. Grades are letters (A, B, C, D, F) with optional plus and minus modifiers. Most US universities expect a minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate school and 3.5+ for honors and competitive scholarships.
United Kingdom (Honours Classes)
UK universities use degree classifications instead of GPA: First Class (70%+), Upper Second / 2:1 (60-69%), Lower Second / 2:2 (50-59%), and Third (40-49%). A 2:1 is the most common requirement for graduate jobs and master's programs, roughly equivalent to a 3.3 GPA.
Pakistan & India (Percentage)
South Asian universities traditionally use percentage marks. A First Division is 60%+ in many institutions, while top schools (LUMS, IBA, NUST, IITs) increasingly use a 4.0 GPA. As a rough conversion: 80%+ = 4.0, 70-79% = 3.5+, 60-69% = 3.0+. HEC Pakistan uses an absolute grading system that this calculator mirrors.
Canada (4.0 Scale)
Most Canadian universities use a 4.0 GPA similar to the US. Some (like the University of Toronto) use a 4.33 scale where A+ is worth 4.33. Percentage equivalents: 90%+ = A+, 85-89% = A, 80-84% = A-, 77-79% = B+, etc.
Australia (HD, D, C, P)
Australian universities grade with: HD - High Distinction (85%+), D - Distinction (75-84%), C - Credit (65-74%), P - Pass (50-64%), and Fail. A weighted average mark (WAM) of 70+ is roughly equivalent to a 3.5 GPA, generally needed for honours and postgraduate study.
